BIP - 36: Infrastructure Costs

Voting ended over 3 years agoSucceeded

Intro

Hi all

In July there was a governance vote that passed authorizing the treasury to cover infrastructure costs. The overarching requirement was:

  • Cost claims would be capped at $10k per month
  • Work towards reducing the average cost
  • Run it for a trial period, with it ending at October month end

This proposal is to continue with the process

Motivation We are now approaching the end of this period and would like the community to approve an extension up to the end of March 2023 Month End.

Included is a visual representation of the monthly infrastructure costs since the start of the year.

Since May we can see that not only have costs reduced, but they have also stabilized at around $5k per month. As a result, as part of the extension, keep the cap at $10k a month.

Infrastructure costs include but are not limited to:

  • AWS which includes: Build pipelines, virtual machines and databases used for the backend, databases and storage for self-hosted RPC and graph-node, load balancers, s3 storage.
  • Cloudflare and Stellate: Cloudflare offers us security services and Stellate is used as a caching layer for the backend graphql endpoint.
  • Domains and website hosting for our frontend

Risks There is a risk that infrastructure costs can become quite substantial. It is for this reason a monthly cap is applied. If there is a month where there is a valid overspend, a separate proposal (with support) will be raised to gain approval for the excess amount.
