BP8: Darwin Plan

Background

• We launched Blank NFTs -- NFTs that evolve by holder vote
• We voted on phase 1: the top three evolution ideas
• We voted on phase 2: the top idea: Darwin (evolving pfps)
• This vote is on phase 3: a plan for how Darwin will work
• If this vote passes the authors plan to submit an implementation plan (timeline, team, compensation) then execute

Elevator pitch:

• Blank holders can upload Birb traits to the website
• Once a month holders can evolve their NFTs to any unique combo of traits (Blank Day!)
• 10% royalties (7% split equally between artists, 3% to treasury)

Incentives:

Artists:

• Easy for anyone to become an NFT artist (just upload a jpeg!)
• Co-create with a community (e.g. create a trait for someone else’s art)
• Earn royalties (7% of royalties split between artists)

Evolvers:

• Right to claim any unique combo of art in the collection
• Early generations and unique art combos may become more valuable
• Ability to evolve NFTs as many times as you want or lock your NFTs on an evolution you want to make them permanent

How it works:

Holders can connect to website

• Connect to Blank website with a Metamask that holds 1+ Blank NFTs
• All further actions can only be taken by connected wallets

Holders can upload art (initially focus on Birb traits)

• Can upload 512x512 images to the Blank collection (stored on S3)
• Collection initially focused on Birbs but holders can upload any art
• Art will be in a “pending” state until manually approved by a moderator
• Harmful images, copyrighted media, etc. will be removed
• Once approved, art will available for all Blank holders to evolve to

Holders can view uploaded art

• View a grid of all art in the Blank collection
• See the address that uploaded, date uploaded, and number of evolutions

Holders can combine art (e.g. put a tophat and coat on a Birb)

• Combine up to 10 pieces of art by defining the order of layers
• View the combined art (similar to what is on the website now)

Holders can select which NFTs to evolve to which art

• Select a piece of art or combination of art
• Select the NFT ID for the NFT in your wallet that you want to evolve
• Can view and edit pending evolutions prior to Blank Day
• Ability to view if your combo of art is unique (if not unique can’t evolve)
• Ability to add or edit a name for your NFT (added to metadata)

All Blank NFTs evolve together once a month

• Once a month all Blank NFTs evolve at the same time (saves on gas)
• Once evolved, assets get uploaded to Arweave (making them permanent)
• The last generation of the evolution shows up in the NFT metadata (if you evolve an NFT in month 1 it’s a gen 1 NFT until it evolves again)
• All unlocked Blanks will auto-evolve to a blank Birb on the first evolution

Holders can lock NFTs

• Holders can pay gas to lock their Blank at any time (may be able to mass lock to reduce gas pending implementation complexity)
• Locked NFTs can never be evolved again, image, name, and generation can’t be changed at any time
• We will need a way for secondary purchasers to check if an NFT is locked before purchasing (so they know if it can be evolved again or not)

Royalties split between artists and treasury

• 10% total royalty on Blank NFT secondary sales
• 7% royalties split evenly between artists who contributed layers to the NFT that sold (e.g. if NFT has 2 layers each artist gets 3.5% royalties)
• 3% to Blank treasury (governed by one vote per Blank NFT)
• Need to research royalty implementation complexity and gas fees

Note

• If we move forward with this plan (which the authors believe is feasible to execute) some small details may change during the course of execution. It'll be too slow to vote on every change but we will do our best to adhere to the spirit of this proposal and be transparent about any material changes in Discord.
