Proposal 36 - OG Server Manager

Voting ended over 2 years agoSucceeded

i. Brief history and background:

For the past two years, I have served as a manager, moderator, security coordinator, and curator of the original CryptoPhunks Discord server. As a dedicated member of this community, I believe it is appropriate to address the matter of compensation for my time and efforts.

I joined the CryptoPhunks movement on June 20th, 2021, 7 days after it began. I was instantly captivated by the impact that a simple flip could have on the most powerful and well-known project in web3, and quickly fell in love with the rebel attitude of the Phunks. During the following weeks, I minted Phunks and fought in the Twitter trenches against the censorship enacted by Nate Chastain (then Head of Product at OpenSea, now convicted felon) and Larva Labs as they delisted the project from OpenSea three separate times.

Fast forward to August 23rd, 2021, the dev team rugged the CryptoPhunks project and I was added to a small team of community members tasked with moderating and organizing the original Discord server. I got to work right away, building out new channels for the various phunky projects brewing at the time, keeping the community up-to-date via announcements, and moderating to ensure that everyone was treated well during their time spent in the server. This mod/admin team that had been assembled eventually began to dwindle as members grew disinterested and left, but I stuck through the hard times and continued working to organize and curate the server for the good of the community.

Almost a year later, on May 27th, 2022, I totaled my car on the way to a wedding and took a break from web3 to deal with the aftermath and get my life together. I returned from my hiatus on June 12th, 2022, to find that ownership of the server had been transferred to me and most of the mod/admin team had decided to sell their Phunks and leave the community behind. I was in a low place after the car accident, I was disheartened that my fellow mods/admins had left, and it would have been easy enough to find someone else to dump this responsibility on. However, my dedication to the ethos of Phunkism and my love for the CryptoPhunks community and its history inspired me to maintain ownership of the Discord server and continue my work to build it into a valuable asset for the community.

Here is some of the work that I have carried out since becoming a mod/admin of the original CryptoPhunks Discord server on 8/23/21 and later receiving ownership of the server on 6/12/22 (in no particular order):

  • I have meticulously curated and maintained the channels in the “Phunk Services” channel group, which aim to provide the community with up-to-date, valuable information regarding the CryptoPhunks ecosystem. I gathered all of the links related to the CryptoPhunks project and CryptoPhunks-adjacent projects. I recorded a complete historical record of the CryptoPhunks project and important community actions, beginning on the date the V1 CryptoPhunks contract was deployed and continuing into the present day. I gathered every article and Twitter thread related to the CryptoPhunks project that I could find (with the help of iape and his Phunks Knowledge Base, as well). And finally, I gathered links to CryptoPhunks merch designed by various members of the community.

  • I have managed the ever-changing ecosystem of community-led projects by creating new channels for builders, artists, and community organizers to collaborate and work together in. The channels of this nature that remain today can be found in the “Phunk Projects” channel group and the token-specific channels in the “Phunk Cultural Center” channel group (philips-hideaway, v3phunks, and pepe-phunks).

  • I redesigned the server guidelines to be as non-restrictive as possible and better align with the ethos and values of Phunkism.

  • I built out an onboarding process for the server that serves CAPTCHA checks to suspicious accounts (or all accounts during a suspected raid), requires each new member to review and accept the server guidelines before joining, and requires each new member to be in the server for 10 minutes or verify ownership of their CryptoPhunks tokens in order to send messages in the server.

  • I set up the two-factor authentication requirement for server moderators to increase security from outside threats. I have also taken care to practice a high level of personal security - including restrictive DM usage and frequent password changes - in order to avoid situations that could lead to ownership of the server falling into malicious hands.

  • I have organized and curated the Phunk Artist Spotlight, which has showcased the work of 38 artists (and counting) in the CryptoPhunks community. I have tagged server members to draw attention to these artists during their spotlights, posted in the NLL server to encourage community members to join the original server and engage with the spotlights, and posted on Twitter to draw attention to the spotlights from the web3 community at large.

  • I completely overhauled the role system using Collab.Land to assign relevant roles to server members based on CryptoPhunks token ownership, and ownership of CryptoPhunks-adjacent tokens like V3Phunks and PepePhunks.

  • I have researched, set up, updated, and maintained various bots to perform functions and tasks to keep the server running smoothly. This includes Collab.Land, which reads and verifies token ownership and assigns roles; Carl-bot, which enables ! commands that post GIFs/images to the chat when called; Dyno, which automatically bans new server members attempting to impersonate an official CryptoPhunks account; EthereumPriceBot, which displays the current price of Ethereum; GasTracker, which displays the current price in gwei per txn; and Tweetshift, which posts tweets from the various CryptoPhunks sales bots and community-run Twitter accounts into server channels. Although it is cheap, I pay $2.50 per month for Tweetshift premium, which is now a requirement for the bot to work.

  • I have managed the CryptoPhunks Treasury proposals that have been put forth before this one. I have created new channels for some of these proposals, managed permissions to those channels, and formatted text. I have posted on Twitter to encourage community members to join the original CryptoPhunks server and the NLL server to stay on top of treasury actions. I have tagged V2 CryptoPhunks holders to guide them to these channels, encourage them to engage in proposal discussions, and remind them to partake in soft votes within the server. I have reminded V2 CryptoPhunks holders to set up Gitcoin Passport in order to be able to partake in official votes on snapshot.org, and encouraged them to partake in those official votes during the 7 day window that each vote is open.

  • I have created a few phunky GIFs which can be posted into the server chat via Carl-bot ! commands. I have also created and uploaded custom server emojis, and encouraged community members to do the same.

  • I have given both of my server boosts to the original CryptoPhunks server, and rallied the community to provide additional boosts on several occasions when members have removed them in order to regain important functionality - mainly the custom server link - in a timely manner.

  • I have spent time almost every day for two years engaging with the CryptoPhunks community in the server. I have worked to invite new members to the original CryptoPhunks server and the NLL server. I have welcomed these new members, reminded them to verify ownership of their CryptoPhunks tokens, and guided them to the various resources available in the server. I have engaged with current members and helped resolve technical issues that have arisen. I have posted announcements to alert the community of important information, events, or action items. I have worked with the community to nominate and add new mods/admins. I have worked with the mod/admin team to ensure that the community guidelines are honored by those who join and spend time in the server, and removed users who have breached those guidelines.

  • Outside of serving as a manager, moderator, security coordinator, and curator, I have also served as one of five trusted community members on the V2 CryptoPhunks Treasury multisig since we recovered the V1 and V2 CryptoPhunks smart contracts, 1000 dev Phunks/Philips, and $1.44m in royalties from ZAGABOND on May 11th, 2022. I have signed transactions to carry out the will of the community through treasury actions and executed a few of these transactions, which costs ETH.

  • Also outside of serving as a manager, moderator, security coordinator, and curator of the original CryptoPhunks Discord server, I have contributed written content to the community as well. I have published three volumes of the Sup Phunks! newsletter, which aimed to shed light on projects being undertaken by members of the CrytoPhunks community at the time. These inspired Tenchi to produce two more volumes of Sup Phunks!, and eventually create his weekly Dose of Phunks bulletin. I also recently created an extensive Twitter thread on the history of the V1 CryptoPhunks token, the first entry in a series of “A Brief Phunky History” threads that I plan to continue writing. I tweet about Phunks in general on a daily basis, and strive to share the story and values of Phunkism with the web3 community at large as often as I can.

ii. Value added to the CryptoPhunks collection/community:

My efforts to manage, moderate, coordinate security for, and curate the original CryptoPhunks Discord server for the past two years have ensured that the CryptoPhunks community retains one of its most precious assets, which has been in existence from the very start of the project. Members new and old can read through the chats as far back as June 7th, 2021, the day the server was created by the dev team that eventually rugged the project.

Without a dedicated member of the community to own, develop, and nurture the original CryptoPhunks Discord server, this important community asset may have been lost. Through my efforts, it has been transformed into a hub of phunky resources, history, and community engagement. I am humbled and honored by the community’s trust in me to serve in this capacity, and I plan to continue doing so regardless of the outcome of this proposal. However, I believe that compensating me for the work I have performed aligns with fair business practices and recognizes the value I have brought to the CryptoPhunks community through my efforts.

iii. Treasury action requested:

I estimate that since joining the mod/admin team on August 23rd, 2021, I have put in an average of 1 hour of work per day. Some days much more, some days much less, but I estimate it averages out to about an hour per day.

According to the leading web3 career data aggregator, community managers make an average hourly rate of $39 per hour.

This coming August 23rd will mark 2 years - 730 days - since August 23rd, 2021.

730 days x 1 hour of work per day, on average x $39 hourly rate = $28,470, rounded up to $28,500

I humbly request a one-time payment of 28,500 USDC to eggboi.eth
