CP_25-005: Coinage Boycott of Covering Ye’s Token Launch
As a community-owned outlet striving to cover stories that inform our members and the wider Web3 world, Coinage understands that there is more at stake now than just clicks and traffic. As we've grown into one of the fastest-growing U.S.-based Web3 outlets (with syndication via TheStreet and Yahoo Finance) we must become more aware and considerate of the stories and projects we choose to bring to the world with our platform.
This proposal seeks a boycott of any coverage dedicated to Ye's upcoming cryptocurrency launch, in order to preserve a coverage focus on other items and to prevent harm to readers.
Context on Proposal 25-005
Coinage is a community-owned Web3 outlet with a mission to highlight the real story of crypto in service of our members and the overall space (in which Coinage operates as a DAO/Co-op.) As an award-winning outlet in the space, our editorial standards should strive to inform readers and seek to prevent knowable and obvious harm caused to them.
As Coinage has documented, a growing number of memecoin launches (particularly celebrity-led memecoin launches) have been revealed to be heavily manipulated, and by almost all accounts, nearly as damage-inflicting as outright exploits. The fact that the team behind Argentinian President Javier Milei's $LIBRA token launch was attached to Melania Trump's $MELANIA token launch with similar results should alarm many.
This proposal advances a mutual understanding shared among members that Coinage's coverage matters and that while Coinage will always remain editorially mandated to uncover truth in any story or interview -- there can be instances where boycotting coverage altogether is the better use of our platform.
Perhaps the most useful example to compare in editorial standards for traditional media would be publishing manifestos from mass shooters. While it may be in the public interest and serve to inform readers, most publications simultaneously weigh the costs of being complicit in serving a criminal's desire for publicity or self-glorification. At hand are memecoins seemingly doing the same.
Context on Ye Token Launch --------------------------
Ye is a 21-time Grammy award-winner with more than 33 Million followers on X. Reports are that either a token launch or blockchain could be imminent. Increasingly, Ye has been tweeting anti-semitic tropes as part of either why he's launching this token, or at least, part of the strategy around the launch of the "Swasticoin."
While there is good reason to suspect that the launch itself may be newsworthy, this proposal seeks to ask members if boycotting the launch -- when taken in the context of what Coinage has already reported on in regards to memecoin launches, and the totality of the project -- would serve our readers.
This proposal pertains to the launch itself. Should Coinage boycott coverage of Ye's token launch?
