Choice of Carbon Offset Project to make Devcon VI Climate Friendly

Voting ended over 3 years agoSucceeded

This vote allows contributors to the Devcon VI Community Carbon Offset Pool to decide on the choice of carbon offset project to retire carbon credits from. Contributions were made with the "Climate Friendly Devcon VI Dapp": https://devcon.discarbon.earth

In order to compensate carbon emissions, the NCT (Nature Carbon Tonne) pool tokens contributed by attendees must be retired (taken out of circulation) in order to avoid a double spend. This requires redeeming the NCT tokens (which represent the carbon offset project tokens from nature-based conservation projects within Toucan Protocol’s Nature Carbon Tonne Pool) for one specific carbon offset project and then retiring them by sending them to the burn address. Please see ToucanProtocol's documentation for further information carbon pool mechanics.

disCarbon has created a curated shortlist of projects to choose from that we have listed below.

  • Cordillera Azul National Park REDD+ Project, Peru (2013): A large national park that was established to protect a 13'000 km^2 forest. It is owned by the Peruvian government but managed by a Peruvian NGO which integrates local communities and stakeholders to develop land-use management compatible with conservation goals. This project has been rated to be excellent. For example BeZero gives it an AA+ rating. Project info, Verra Registry project page, contract on Polygonscan.
  • Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project, Indonesia (2014): This project prevented a tropical peat swamp forest rich in biodiversity and home to the endangered Bornean orangutan from being converted to palm oil plantations. The project is planned to run for 30 years to not only protect the forest and water but also empower local communities to make this preservation project a success in the long term. It integrates 12 of the 17 sustainable development goals. This project has been rated to be among the best nature preservation projects in the carbon certificate space. For example, BeZero gave it an AAA rating. Project website, Verra Registry project page, contract on Polygonscan.
  • North Pikounda REDD+ (2012), via auto-retire -> 10% more credits*: This project preserves over 92'000 ha of native Congolese forest. It directly prevented 56'000 ha from logging as a logging concession has been handed out prior to establishing this project. It also maintains the biodiversity in the area which is the native home of the Western Lowland Gorilla. project info, Verra Registry project page, contract on Polygonscan.

Auto-retire explanation: ToucanProtocol's NCT pool allows either selective or automatic redemptions when redeeming pool tokens for a concrete carbon offset project. A selective redemption allows the user to swap NCT tokens for carbon credits from a tokenized carbon offset project available within the pool. Selective redemptions incur a 10% fee of which 5% go to retiring carbon credits from the oldest carbon offset project available in the pool (in order to promote auto-renewal by removing the oldest available credits) and 5% go to ToucanProtocol's treasury as a service fee for providing on-chain carbon credit infrastructure. Automatic redemptions do not incur fees to incentivize a continual renewal of carbon credits in the NCT pool. This means that this option would retire an additional 10% of carbon credits.
