DIP-79 Dope Frenzy

Project Overview

Dope Frenzy was created on a self-funded budget with no initial funding from DOPE DAO. The game was developed as a way to support the DopeWars ecosystem and showcase the potential of using NFTs and the $PAPER token in a fun and interactive game. The team collaborated with a game studio to design an engaging single-player game where players could destroy parts of the city to gain points. However, the team soon realized that the game lacked the engagement needed to bring users together, so they incorporated a battle-royale style event where players could compete against each other for points that could be later claimed for $PAPER or other reward incentives.

UnixLabs plans to add a Web3 component so that players will be able to log in with their wallets and choose to either pay in $PAPER to join the 10min tournament rounds or play against others with real gear on the line (utilizing a player vs player theft protocol). This will enhance the ecosystem through integrations for drug NFTs, weapons, and other items.

For the current Frenzy website the game so far created, and the improvement and mods as described in this proposal, Unix seeks funding as described below payable in OP tokens. UnixLabs proposes an even 50/50 split in revenue generated from the game back to the DAO. Unix will maintain the website and game to make sure things are stable. UnixLabs are now a large holder of DOPE and are an important part of the DopeWars community. Their main goal is to make the game as fun as possible and increase the use cases for the L2 Gear items on Optimism and the $PAPER token on Optimism. This proposal will also include the usage of OP player incentive tokens. The creation of Dope Frenzy has become a passion project for UnixLabs who strongly believe in the vision of DopeWars, this is evidenced by the large body of work that has already been self funded and undertaken. Moreover, the team sees Dope Frenzy as a bridge to the Web3 world. Crypto and crypto gaming's problem has always been how to gain interest from traditional web2 players. This will be kept in mind and best tried to deliver. The project will stay open to incorporating assets from the RYO On-Chain game from Cartridge provided that a bridge back to Optimism is created.

UnixLabs are excited to trailblaze this exciting initiative which aims to realize the successful fusion of a DAO (DOPE DAO) and a Commercial Business (UnixLabs) in a way that achieves maximum potential by amplifying the strengths and mitigating the limitations of each entity. As part of UnixLabs commitment to transparency and collaboration with the DopeWars community, we plan to provide fortnightly updates via media and voice group calls with the Dope Labs team throughout the entire improvement process. This way, everyone can stay up-to-date on our progress and give feedback or ask questions as we work to make Dope Frenzy even better. We estimate that it will take approximately three months for us to complete the production phase of the upgrade. During this time, we will work tirelessly to integrate Web3 functions and add new features, such as the paid tournament rounds that will last for 10 minutes each. We are confident that the end result will be a truly amazing gaming experience that showcases the potential of NFTs and the $PAPER token in a fun and interactive way, powered by OPTIMISM.

Cyberbitz has been an integral part of the creation of Dope Frenzy, a lot of his time and resources have gone into making the current development. Cyberbitz will continue to act as Project Manager and liaison for the development of Dope Frenzy ensuring that the the project maintains it’s important link with the DopeWars community providing that feedback loop. This project was dreamed up by Cyberbitz and only made possible by an initial 15k USD investment made by Cyberbitz. This money was paid up front out of Cyber’s personal funds and this proposal will seek to repay that debt. The 15k USD up front payment from Cyber allowed UnixLabs an opportunity to start work and allowed the project to develop into a passion project for UnixLabs as well. The current Beta status of Dope Frenzy represents a value much higher than what this 15k initial payment (and even the amount described below in the Beta release funding request) would normally buy. As part of the community UnixLabs are looking to contribute valuably and collectively.

Components & Responsibilities

  1. Upgrading Dope Frenzy: UnixLabs is responsible for upgrading the current beta version of Dope Frenzy with better graphics, additional non-playable characters (NPCs), a game lobby, a web3 component, and an enhanced vehicle system.
  2. Maintaining the website and game: UnixLabs is responsible for maintaining the website and game to ensure they are stable.
  3. Liaising between parties: Cyberbitz is responsible for liaising between parties in a Product Management role.
  4. Providing player incentives: A pool of 15,000 OP tokens will be allocated as player incentives to be included in an appropriate way once Dope Frenzy is ready.
  5. Providing transparency and collaboration: UnixLabs and Cyberbitz are responsible for providing fortnightly updates via media and voice group calls throughout the upgrade process to ensure transparency and collaboration with the DopeWars community.
  6. Revenue sharing/ Social Contract: UnixLabs proposes a 50/50 split in all game revenue generated from the DOPE Frenzy back to the DAO.
  7. The code and building infrastructure used to create Dope Frenzy remains property of UnixLabs. DopeWars Intellectual Property remains property of DOPE DAO.
  8. UnixLabs commits to collaboration with DopeWars Community but final decision making for game design rests with UnixLabs.
  9. Collaborations, Project Connections & Grant/Funding options that may become available to Dope Frenzy shall be an issue that is negotiated between UnixLabs and DOPE DAO, in good faith, as they arise. Often collaboration or project connection opportunities come with associated development costs as well as benefits available. Theses opportunities will be explored in the spirit of transparency, partnership, fairness and mutual benefit as they present.
  10. Additional artwork: Any additional artwork from the Dope Wars artist that might be needed will be billed outside of this proposal.

1. Beta

Overview

The event is designed in a battle-royale style, where players are pitted against each other in an intense fight for the highest score. The competition is intense, with players having the opportunity to earn points by causing damage to buildings and vehicles, as well as other players or NPCs. To add to the excitement, a wide range of weapons are available for players to use, which randomly spawn on the map. In addition, players have the option to use drugs which grant them special abilities.

Deliverables

  • Multiplayer game with destructible environment and battle-royale features.

2. Game Enhancements

Overview

Upgrade and expand the DopeWars ecosystem by improving the Dope Frenzy gaming experience. The upgrade includes adding better graphics, additional non-playable characters and an enhanced vehicle system.

Scope

  • Improved animation - clean up existing visuals and animations
  • Additional NPCs - to fill out the world and provide more interaction with even single players,
  • Improved vehicle system - UnixLabs plans to enhance the vehicle system, providing better vehicle sprites, and even adding a drive-by shooting ability in certain vehicles.

Deliverables

  • Upgrade the current beta of Dope Frenzy to a much richer gameplay experience.
  • Add better graphics and additional NPC’s to fill out the world and provide more interaction with even single players.
  • Enhance the vehicle system, providing better vehicle sprites, and even adding a drive-by shooting ability in certain vehicles.

3. Web3 Integration

Overview

Players will be able to log in with their wallets, a feature that allows them to easily access the game platform. Once logged in, they will have the option to pay in $PAPER to join the 10min tournament rounds or play against other players using real gear. Playing against other players with real gear on the line adds a new level of excitement and risk. This feature utilizes a “player vs player theft protocol”, which ensures that the game is fair and secure for all players involved. With these two options available, players can choose the one that best suits their preferences and play style.

  • The OP funds allocated for Player incentives should also be implemented. An initial pool of 15,000 OP tokens can be allocated to be distributed as game play incentives. The best way (and most fun way) to achieve this will be established by UnixLabs in conjunction with input from the Community under the Management of Cyberbitz. These tokens will remain with the DAO until Dope Frenzy is ready to distribute them.

Overview

The game lobby is an important feature that allows players who are already logged in to search for others to join in with. This feature is essential for creating a fun and engaging experience for everyone involved. By providing a platform for players to interact with one another, the game lobby helps to build a sense of community among gamers.

Scope

  • Provide a game lobby where players who are logged in will be able to search for others to join in with.

Deliverables

  • Lobby to display created games ready to start

Funding via Trusted Partner Protocol

As described in the updated RAPID process, DOPE DAO accounts for Trusted Developers/Partners to have a certain status with regard to payment. This is especially important for this project because UnixLabs, as a commercial business, will have defined financial parameters that need to be set before the tasks can be properly planned and initiated. Like mentioned above UnixLabs are significant DOPE holders with proven deliverables as well as being doxed developers with a high reputation to uphold. For this reason the team seeks approval that, if this proposal receives a successful vote, the entire allotment of funding (excluding player OP incentives) be transferred to a (transparently observable) UnixLabs Developer wallet (Cookie Jar) to be stabled. This will provide certainty and secure runway for the work. Once funds are located in the ‘Cookie Jar’ UnixLabs will be entitled to remove funds from the Cookie Jar as described below:

  1. 100% allotment (65k USD) as described above in BETA upon completion of a successful vote through the DOPE DAO Official Proposal Process.
  2. 50% allotment (10k USD) as described above in GAME ENHANCEMENTS upon initiation of work. 50% allotment (10k USD) upon completion of deliverables.
  3. 50% allotment (12.5k USD) as described above in WEB3 INTEGRATION upon initiation of work. 50% allotment (12.5k USD) upon completion of deliverables.
