Rename “FreeRossDAO” to “FREE”

TL;DR

This proposal suggests, in order to best support Ross, we must take the following actions:

Stop operating, publishing media and posting as FreeRossDAO Change the DAO’s name to FREE.

DESCRIPTION

Please Note: All FreeRossDAO-related activities are, and have been, performed by the members of FreeRossDAO. The mission statement, opinions expressed, and ultimate actions of FreeRossDAO are undertaken and performed by members of FreeRossDAO and those who are sympathetic to FreeRossDAO.

For the sake of clarity: Ross Ulbricht is not a member of FreeRossDAO and has no authority over the FreeRossDAO mission statement, opinions, activity, or membership.

This proposal formally changes the name of the “FreeRossDAO” to simply “FREE”. This name change comes at the request of Ross and the Ulbricht family, and the new name “FREE” aligns with both our $FREE token as well as our mission.

It has always been the priority of the DAO to act as an extension of the #FreeRoss movement in support of Ross Ulbricht and his family in his pursuit of freedom. And it is with this priority in mind that we advocate for a change of name for our DAO.

The “FreeRossDAO” name has done us much good, and we all rallied behind it because we wanted the world to know that we were here to FREE ROSS, but it is also causing confusion between the efforts led by his family and us.

The name ‘FreeRossDAO’ is too similar to the name of ‘FreeRoss.org’ making it too easy to conflate our DAO and their organization. It can lead people to believe we speak for Ross, or that our actions represent him, and this can end up doing more harm than good. We do not speak for Ross, so we move to change the name of the DAO to a new name.

The name will need to be changed on all web pages, blog posts, social media sites, and new .COMs and ENS will need to be purchased.

MISSION ALIGNMENT

This name change supports the campaign to Free Ross Ulbricht by accepting that we do not need to lead with Ross’s name to best support him.

$5,000 for purchasing new url, ens, etc

SUNSET

This change is permanent and requires no sunset date.

SUCCESS METRIC

The Moment the Advisory Board accepts that this proposal must pass for vote is the moment we know this proposal is a success to the people protecting Ross’ interest, which makes it a success for us.
