tl;dr

This proposal covers two things:

1. IP Licensing.

Amongst other things, $free represents fractional ownership in the Ross Ulbricht Genesis Collection. We’re looking to create a permissionless licensing scheme for the FreeRossDAO so that members of our community can act in an officially recognized capacity on behalf of the DAO when it comes to using the artwork and the implied intellectual property. The licensing scheme we propose is Creative Commons BY-NC-SA/4.0/.

2. Bid on the Ross Ulbricht "Growth Collection."

Ross Ulbricht is releasing several new pieces of artwork (dubbed the “Growth” collection), to be unveiled at the Bitcoin22 Conference in Miami. As collectors and advocates for Ross, we’d like to fundraise for and enter a credible bid for these pieces.

Proposal

1. IP Licensing Terms

From time to time, opportunities will arise to use the artwork from the Genesis Collection to promote the cause of FreeRossDAO and our mission statement, and the members of the DAO ought to feel empowered to do so without going through a bureaucracy of gatekeepers.

That’s why it’s important to have a baseline licensing scheme that’s both widely used and widely understood for such a purpose agreed upon by the fractional owners of the intellectual property.

Creative Commons is a non-profit geared around engineering just such permissionless licensing, and their specific license (BY-NC-SA 4.0) seems to fit our needs perfectly.

This is a human-readable summary of (and not a substitute for) the license (which is linked in its entirety here).

A Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 license means anyone is free to:

• Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
• Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
• FreeRossDAO (the licensor) cannot revoke these freedoms as long as the licensee follows the license terms.

The terms of this license are enumerated (in plain English) as follows:

• Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

• NonCommercial — You may not use the material for commercial purposes.

• ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.

• No additional restrictions — You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.

For additional clarity:

• No Other Rights Affected — Other rights that might be related to the work are not affected. Publicity, moral rights and other related rights are unaffected, including fair use rights as well.
• All Rights are Negotiable — A CC license is not set in stone. As long as other potential licensees get the permission from the DAO (the holders of the copyright), they can go beyond the terms of this license (i.e., for commercial usage requests). If a potential licensee wants to make use of the work that goes beyond the license or may be questionable, they should feel free to contact the DAO via our publicized communications channels.
• Permissible Use - Since FreeRossDAO is the owner of the Ross Ulbricht Genesis Collection, individual member use must be consistent with the cause of FreeRossDAO and our mission statement. Questions about permissible use should be directed to freerossdao@gmail.com.

2. Bid on the Ross Ulbricht "Growth Collection."

Ross has created several new pieces of artwork, including an animation, that will be unveiled at the Bitcoin22 Conference in Miami, April 6-9th. These pieces will be offered up for sale on the Scarce.City artwork marketplace, a site “that uses Bitcoin technology to sell Bitcoin goods for Bitcoin.”

The NFT sale which resulted in the creation of this DAO was a rousing success, and resulted in a final sale price of 1446 ETH, which went to a trust primarily tasked with the legal defense of Ross Ulbricht. While the capital was a boon, it was not the full amount needed to mount a proper campaign to petition for a Presidential pardon.

Just as FreeRossDAO did for the Genesis collection bid, we’d like to open up our DAO for new donors and contributors to pool funds for a group bid. There are currently five paintings in the collection and one animation.

We will accept donations to our main wallet between the passage of this proposal and the end of the auction, and 100% of those donations will be applied towards bidding on the artwork.

• 80% of the donated amount will be used towards the bid (and go, post if we win, to the legal fund, or if we lose, towards the general endowment for FreeRossDAO).
• 20% of bids are used to buy back $FREE via the open markets and distribute to donors proportional to the donated amounts. This buyback will occur over 30 days to accrue the maximum amount of $FREE from open markets to reward donors with.

We will be supporting Lyn Ulbricht's auction of the artwork by evangelizing our message at the conference with several activations and activities, including:

• Attending and tabling at a "Whale Party" event offered for private collectors and donors to view the artwork in a small crowd setting.
• Commissioning a recreation of Ross's cell in conjunction with the viewing of the artwork.
• An get as many people as possible to dress up like DPR at Bitcoin2022 creating a DPR Human Blockchain as an action to show visible support for Ross.
• Creating print materials of the existing Genesis collection as well as the new Growth collection for distribution at the show.
• Creating print flipbooks of the animated piece from the Growth collection.
• Creating print copies of Railroaded for distribution.
