In partnership with Ace Hotel’s Global Artist in Residency (AiR) Program & Superchief NFT, FWB sought submissions for a month-long artist residency at the Palm Springs Ace Hotel & Swim Club.
For the month of January, the selected artist will live at the property, producing a body of work to exhibit on site for the month of February. Kicking off the exhibition will be a Weekender celebration at the Hotel, final date to be determined.
Each artist has provided reference artwork (linked to each artist's name) along with a brief description of what the artist proposes to do during their residency. See here for artist statements.
Describe a project or installation you envision creating during your residency: During my time in residence, I would create meditations on landscape on 16mm film and process with natural materials. I would manipulate these images with ink and collaged materials from local thrift shops such as books, magazines, old photos that I will use image transfer techniques to create a moving image on transparent 16mm leader film. I will also employ phytogram processes and cyanotype image making to further engage with the native flora. Once the end product is scanned I would select key frames to enlarge and manipulate. In a collaboration with old and new experimental technologies, I will run these images through Blender to create an alternative landscape of Palm Springs that interact with layers of earth collaboration.
Describe a project or installation you envision creating during your residency: The most magical moments of a trip often come from unexpected connections. Hotels occupy a liminal space between home and the unknown, where strangers can connect in spontaneous, meaningful ways. Yet in a world where we’re often glued to our phones, these connections aren't guaranteed. For this residency, I’ll create a series of participatory works—using way-finding, visual cues, and experience design—to activate the hotel’s transient community. I’ll begin with research mapping the hotel’s spatial and social dynamics, identifying chances to embed conversation rituals in lounges, poolside spaces, and fitness areas. These rituals, combining structure with spontaneity, might feature way-finding elements with unexpected prompts or guided rituals by the pool. Once established, I’ll train select hotel staff as 'curators of conversation,' ensuring the program continues seamlessly. This process will be documented through notes, photos, and video, archived on the blockchain.

Describe a project or installation you envision creating during your residency: During the residency, I’ll be working on collecting and editing film and visual for the video art piece accompanying my song BLSSD, a glimpse into the Broadcast Era of Tash55. This video art will dive into themes of identity and perception, weaving glitchy, analog-inspired visuals reminiscent of retro TV static and neon signage. The visuals will pulse and shift like a vintage broadcast, creating a hypnotic, layered experience that captures the essence of Palm Springs' unique mix of retro charm and forward-thinking energy, immersing viewers in a surreal, evolving world.
Describe a project or installation you envision creating during your residency: I use an EEG headband that reads my brainwaves, that converts to data which then can turn into music (I use my in realtime brain data to play my synthesizers live) and can react to the environment in real-time creating audio feedback and frequency to project and create visual feedback in realtime.
Describe a project or installation you envision creating during your residency: The installation would feature a combination of large-scale collage prints, photography, and projection art. The combination of my collages and projected images would ultimately create new dialogues to be explored. These layers would combine found imagery from vintage queer magazines, retro advertisements, women's bodybuilding. To incorporate emerging technology, I would use projection mapping to overlay subtle, moving graphic typography and homoerotic motifs on the fabric collage. This dynamic layer would shift throughout the day, creating a dialogue between the static printed images and the moving digital elements. It would evoke the sense of a living, breathing history—one that’s constantly evolving, much like Palm Springs itself. The soundscape would include synth and Italo disco. Creating a sensory experience that’s immersive and nostalgic.
Describe a project or installation you envision creating during your residency: I imagine a meditative yet striking audiovisual installation inspired by the site of Palm Springs and the time-place of January 2025. Drawing upon the connection between the desert—especially the mystique of the desert at night—and outer space, I seek to bring the audience into another world. Using practical production design with sculpture, lighting, spatial arrangement and sound working in tandem with a generative AI element that acts as a "guide" for each user (Thin: the little device with headphones typically given out at tourist tours) I would create an immersive experience that mirrors a psychedelic experience, making the user question their everyday reality for the better. I believe that illusion is the foundation of art, and I do not mean this in a derogatory way. I would utilize a multi-media illusion to translate a feeling of 21st century lostness. I want people to leave with a better understanding of themselves and of the time and place they exist in.
