The heat check for Gas-less GAS staking has passed. As indicated in the roadmap, the next step for having this action be passed by the DAO is a formal consensus check on Snapshot.
Rationale: The Gas DAO’s primary mission is to give a voice to Ethereum’s most active users through the governance of a decentralized permission-less DAO. The Gas DAO community was quite vocal though numerous channels asking for single sided staking. Classic single sided staking would result in a loss of governance rights, this proposal effectively fulfills the goals of single sided staking through encouraging governance participation while also continuing to reward the networks most active users through a gas "rebate".
Execution: The GAS staking contract could look like: https://github.com/gasdao/gasdao/blob/main/contracts/GasDaoStaking.sol The first step on-chain is to send GAS tokens from the treasury to a Merkle airdrop contract controlled by the Timelock controller. After the staking period ends there will be another on-chain proposal to start the Merkle airdrop. Proposal arguments to seed the staking contract: targets = [0x6Bba316c48b49BD1eAc44573c5c871ff02958469] values = [0], calldatas = [transfer(GasDaoTokenStakingRewardContract_Address, 30B)] description = “Seed GAS staking contract.”
Pros: This proposal effectively takes supply offline for an extended period of time like single-sided staking would do without compromising Gas DAO’s core mission as users would not have to give away their governance rights to a staking contract.
It also allows for active users of the network to continue to be rewarded in the form of Gas tokens.
It further encourages Gas DAO adoption by incentivizing new users to participate in Gas DAO governance.
Cons: If the DAO cannot reach consensus on which Merkle airdrop to set at the end of the staking period, then the airdrop will not happen.
Claiming rewards will still require gas at the end of the airdrop.
Users who hold and delegate $GAS but do not use the network over the next 2 months will not be rewarded.
