Gutter Gang x Renee Montgomery Foundation - The Last Yard

Voting ended almost 3 years agoSucceeded

This request is to support the Renee Montgomery Foundation, a 501c3 started in 2019 as an effort to serve the community of Atlanta. As a whole every initiative of the Foundation strives to promote love, positivity, and equality to all.

Renee was drafted 4th overall in the WNBA and is a 2 time WNBA Champion with the Minnesota Lynx, while also being named All-Star and 6th Woman of the Year in her 11 year professional career. In February 2021, Montgomery decided to retire after sitting out of the 2020 WNBA season to focus on social justice reform. That same year, she became co-owner and Vice President of the Atlanta Dream, making her the first WNBA player to become an owner and executive of a WNBA team. The initiative within her foundation that stood out to me the most was ‘The Last Yard’. For this initiative, the Renee Montgomery Foundation has partnered with Morris Brown College to help students with financial aid in an effort to keep them in higher education.

Founded in 1881, Morris Brown College was the first educational institution in Georgia to operate under sole African–American patronage. Back in 2002, Morris Brown’s accreditation was revoked because of debt and financial mismanagement. The once-flourishing college then saw its enrollment plummet from about 2,000 to less than 50.

Faced with mounting debt and a crumbling infrastructure, the school’s board of trustees offered the administration an option: shutter their doors for good. Its days as an active college appeared to be over. The college’s president disagreed. He believed there was still a chance to regain accreditation, and evolve as an operational campus. In April 2022, 20 years later, the college regained its accreditation.

I am looking for a $25,000 donation from Gutter Gives to the Renee Montgomery Foundation in support of The Last Yard, providing students of this historical HBCU and newly re-accredited university with the financial assistance that is often needed to complete the school year/semester.
