Chaos Gallery and Merch

Voting ended almost 3 years agoSucceeded

Full Proposal: https://songcamp.notion.site/Chaos-Gallery-Merch-7beef03c0dfd47e1896950799e5d6a1a

Below is a summary of all the Chaos Gallery and Chaos Merch initiatives, which are driven by the same project team – Private Woman, Kevin Shaw, greydient.

This team was granted $4,601 from a past proposal.  Below is a summary of how those funds have been used and how much is remaining.  This document proposes how to use the remaining funds and makes a request for additional funds of $6,475 for ongoing management of the Chaos SuperRare Gallery and creation/distribution of new Chaos Merch.

The Chaos Gallery sales will all be directed to the Chaos Visual artists selling the work, no funds will be going to the Chaos Primary Split or Common pool.

The Chaos Merch will be sold close to cost and any profits from the sales will be distributed equally amongst all Visual Team members as their designs are being leveraged for this merch run.

Chaos Gallery

Work completed to date

  • Originally the plan was to create a mechanism to display and sell chaos art (e.g. Chaos paintings) but the team has been accepted on SuperRare through Space Race #4 and doesn’t require development cost to display and sell art
  • Instead of starting the build for a mechanism to display Chaos Art, the project team directed their energy to creating a proposal for SuperRare and managing the onboarding process to the platform
  • The team was successfully selected for gallery

Future work (Jan 2023 - April 2023)

  • Create a plan to gather materials from artists, operate and execute two exhibitions on SuperRare
  • Setup up the Gallery space
  • Create and execute the marketing of the Gallery amongst other Chaos and Songcamp initiatives
  • Onboard Chaos artists onto SuperRare
  • Shipping framed physical paintings to collectors of those corresponding 1:1 NFTs

Chaos Merch

Work completed to date

  • Explored the process of creating merch for Chaos including utilizing IYK tags which provided NFTs alongside each shirt
  • Team created t-shirts which sold successfully at the LA event and the team recouped most of the creation cost
    • Private Woman managed the creation process from end-to-end to fabricate the highest quality t-shirts possible

Future work (Jan 2023 - April 2023)

  • Determine optimal garments for this merch run (one t-shirt and one hoodie/sweatshirt)
    • Considering between budget friendly vs. higher quality
  • Create new merch designs for the two garments (work being led by Private Woman)
  • Test printing designs on each garment
  • Final prints and shipping of garments to NFT NYC
  • Run merch table at NFT NYC

This team requires budget from recoupment and additional funding from common pool to manage the gallery process and create a bigger batch of Chaos merch in time for the live show proposed.

Participants

  • Stewards: Private Woman, Kevin Shaw, greydient
  • Gallery Lead: Kevin Shaw
  • Merch Lead: Private Woman
  • Gallery Exhibitors: Chaos Visual Team

Timeline

This proposal will be for work completed Jan 2023 - April 2023.

Chaos Gallery will have two exhibitions, in March and April. Once NFTs are exhibited in the gallery, very little operations work is required to continue management.

Similarly, once the Merch is created, our hope is to sell out at NFT NYC and therefore not have overhead to manage merch afterwards.

Resource Requirements

Use of previous funds

  • Through the last proposal for Gallery and Merch, the team was allocated $4,601. They generated $1,987 in revenue, incurred $2,212 in expenses, and now have a current cash balance of $4,376. See Exhibit 1 below.
  • The original proposal had value flow allocations going to a) visual artists involved in the drop, b) headless band, c) project team, and d) returns to the common pool. We now propose to return the current cash balance with the same relative allocations but now excluding the common pool. See Exhibits 2 and 3.

Exhibit 1 - Chaos Paintings Proposal

Beginning Cash Balance $ 4,601
Merch $ 1,987
Gallery $ -
Total Revenue $ 1,987
Merch – shirts, printing, tags, shipping $ 1,127
Merch – IYK – NFC chips $ 175
Paintings – framing $ 910
Project Team Compensation $ -
Total Expenses $ 2,212
Deficit / (Surplus) $ (225)
Current Cash Balance $ 4,376

Exhibit 2 - Adjusted allocation of Chaos Paintings Proposal

Original Adjusted* Allocation of current cash from merch sales and surplus from paintings project
Chaos Visual Artist(s) 30% 54% $2,382
Chaos Headless Band 20% 36% $1,588
Chaos Project Team 5% 9% $407
Chaos Common Pool 45% 0% $0
Total 100% 100% $4,376

This reallocation is due to the Chaos Common Pool ending

  • The adjusted % allocations above maintain the same proportions as in the original, but simply exclude the allocation to the Common Pool.

Exhibit 3 - Final Flow of Funds from Chaos Paintings Proposal

Allocation of current cash from merch sales and surplus from paintings project
* Chaos Visual Artist (Kevin) + Project Team (Kevin + Erica)
To be split equally between the two $2,788
Chaos Headless Band
(Primary Split) $1,588
Total $4,376

Assumes Erica and Kevin split "Chaos Visual Artist" and "Chaos Project Team" funds from merch sales and surplus from paintings project 50/50 as compensation for project launch.

Proposed Budget / New Funds required

  • The team is asking for a total of $6,475 for this proposal split into management work for the Gallery and Merch, shipping costs for physical paintings and raw material costs for merch. Merch assumptions and cost breakdowns noted below
  • Our aim is to sell the new merch close to cost to make this final run of merch more affordable to Chaos members and supporters. Any profits generated from the merch run will be distributed equally amongst all Visual Team members as their designs will be used.
Estimated Merch Costs
Unit cost Units Total
Shirts $15 50 $750
Hoodies/sweatshirts $38 50 $1,900
Total $2,650
Total Budget requested for 2023
Ongoing Chaos Gallery mgmt (Jan-April 2023)
Ongoing Merch mgmt (Jan-April 2023)
Physical paintings shipping
Merch raw material costs
Total Compensation of Gallery and Merch Management

Note: Management costs to be shared equally amongst Kevin Shaw and Private Woman

Risks / Disadvantages

  • With a lack of momentum on Chaos initiatives, there is a possibility that selling out Chaos Gallery NFTs may prove difficult
  • With a larger run of merch, we may have leftover merch which will be a wasted cost
    • This can be mitigated by distributing remaining merchandise at cost to Chaos members

Optimal Outcome

This action would prove beneficial if it:

  • Launches the Chaos Gallery on SuperRare
    • helping to spread the Chaos lore to the SuperRare community and more broadly through this marketing effort
    • generating additional revenue for Chaos visual artists
  • Launches the merch drop
    • supporting the NFT NYC event and crescendo moment for Chaos as a whole
    • providing memorable goods for Chaos members and supporters
    • generating additional revenue for Chaos visual artists
