Technology, culture, and people from all over the world converge on the blockchain. Back in Spring 2022, PeopleDAO had a theory: translation services will be in high demand, with the surge in digital commerce and coordination happening between individuals who speak different languages. Rooted in a global meme, our community contained a labor supply of translators who understood the unique slang and technical terms of crypto. We seemed uniquely positioned to take advantage of the need for translation in Web3, and our goal was to become a public good.

But only half of this theory proved true in the marketplace. Our Discord was flooded with translators looking for work. We provided services to clients like Greenpilled, PizzaDAO, and CultDAO. But mostly the jobs never materialized, despite us marketing to many DAOs and even offering to translate at discounted rates.

We diagnose three issues:

  1. The bear market hit and DAOs held less funds to pay for services.
  2. We got feedback early on that DAOs would rather translate in-house as part of building community among their non-English members.
  3. AI like ChatGPT put powerful automated translation in the hands of the public.

The Core Team is responding to the evidence after testing the LanguageDAO experiment for a year. We seek to shrink the DAO down to essential operations, and re-assimilate into PeopleDAO infrastructure. We will function like the old Translation Team, while still providing an on-demand outlet for any DAO/protocols interested in paying for human, nuanced translation.

The proposal details:

  1. Merge the LanguageDAO treasury back with the PeopleDAO treasury
  2. Cut costs to a single staffer, who will coordinate translators, delivery of product, and accounting/rewards
  3. Merge our Discord back with PeopleDAO
  4. Continue sporadic upkeep of the Twitter
  5. Remain a space of play for anyone interested in exploring opportunities at the intersection of language and Web3

Voting YES is a vote in favor of all these actions. Voting NO is a rejection of this proposal. Voting FURTHER DISCUSSION means you partially agree but want to discuss the details of the merge more.
