Session 1 Funding Proposal: DAO Voting System Project Working Group

Voting ended almost 4 years agoSucceeded

Situation

What are you proposing? I am proposing the funding of the DAO Voting System Project Working Group for Session 1 ending on 6/1/2022.

What is the core problem(s) you want to solve?

  • Report on Best Practices: We need to understand the best practices for a DAO voting system that incentivizes community participation and is resilient to “whale-weighted” outcomes.
  • Taxonomy of Voting Types: Not all community decisions have the same weight/importance, in order to make sure we can remain as agile / democratic, we must implement different types of voting that each have a set of rules based on their level of impact.
  • Get Community Buy-in: In order for our voting system to be based on legitimacy, we will need to offer a trade-off analysis of different voting mechanisms to the community and get their feedback on which system best reflects their desired form of governance.
  • Understand Tooling/Costs: We need to understand any tools that are required to implement the community-chosen model, and any costs associated with that tooling.
  • Long-term Roadmap: Finally, our analysis should offer thoughts on how the voting system may become more advanced through bespoke tooling / use of POAPs / delegated voting / etc.

Why is this worth addressing today? This is important to address today because….

  • In order for our DAO to best collaborate on governance, we must have a voting system that empowers individuals who contribute to the community to be incentivized through governance benefits to continue driving value.
  • It is important that we have a system that allows the community to propose their own initiatives and remain agile/accountable throughout the process.

How will you address it? This working group will address by doing/creating/running...

  • Report on various governance/voting mechanisms and their tradeoffs for the community.
  • Community feedback on which system to implement.
  • An analysis of what tooling will be required to implement the communities governance choice.
  • Implementation of the chosen system by end of Session 1.
  • Short report on how this system can evolve throughout further sessions.

What impact will this project have?

  • Giving the Community A Proper Voice: Frequently in the Kirby Holder chats we see the community’s need for a more complex voting system that will allow for most democratic outcomes.
  • Planning for the future: The DAO should feel prepared to research & plan for future governance needs.
  • Resilient Voting: The DAO should actively prevent an outcome where whales are able to overwhelm the community’s preference.

Working Group Leader(s)

  • Directly responsible individual: @lemondropkid
  • (Optional) Co-Lead: @jakestandley

Proposed Budget: What budget is needed for you to achieve your goals?

Current ETH Price = $3150

Category Rate (ETH) Number Total (ETH)
Contributor Compensation .25 5 1.25
Total - - 1.25

Use of Funds: Community members should be compensated for their time.

**Note: As we align on a proper Treasury Management tool/system, a separate budget proposal will be submitted for a Snapshot vote.

Organization - How will it work?

What will you be doing? [What is the rough order of work operations for the N months of existence?]

Sprint 1: •Research Best Voting Mechanisms from existing communities •Create a database of voting mechanisms/ participation rates / pros and cons.

Sprint 2: • Synthesize research into a report to be shared with the community. • Open a week-long vote for the community to voice which system they want to implement.

Sprint 3: • Implement the community’s chosen model. • Create short write up of how the voting system works for new members into some type of wiki/post

How will you interface with the community?

Our progress during Session 1 in this Kanban board in Air table. I have each task set up as a Product Backlog Item (PBI), with an accurate description and outline of the acceptance criteria/deliverables.

As we make progress on each PBI, WG members will add ‘comments’ to the tickets to see who has made what progress. In addition, this way, the tickets themselves will remain unedited, so the community has total transparency as to the progress we’ve made.

By adhering to this schedule as much as we should be able to deliver:

“Get community buy-in and launch voting system that fits Snapshot capabilities and is able to present different quorum thresholds for various situations like proposed spend as % of treasury funds.”
