After a six-week break, I'm thrilled to welcome everyone back to Optimism Fractal Season 6 and Optimism Town Hall Season 4! I hope everyone enjoyed their spring break and is looking forward to reconvening this Thursday, May 15th, for the season debuts of Optimism Fractal and Optimism Town Hall!
Over the past seasons, we've built something truly special together. From our amazing community of dedicated contributors to the significant improvements in our software and educational resources, we've created solid foundations that position us to make this our most impactful season yet. I'm deeply grateful for everyone's contributions so far and stoked about what we'll accomplish together in this new season.
I’m excited to reconnect with you all, play the beloved Optimism Fractal Respect Game, and explore exciting new topics about the Superchain in our new season. In this post, I'm sharing my topic proposal for what I'd like to discuss at our first Optimism Town Hall of Season 4.
Our first event of the season provides the perfect opportunity to reconnect, reflect on our accomplishments, and chart our course for the months ahead. We've come a long way together over the past year and a half, and we're now well-positioned to make this season our most successful yet.
With the solid foundations we've built together - from our growing community of dedicated contributors to the significant improvements in our software and educational resources - we have everything we need to take Optimism Fractal and Optimism Town Hall to the next level. I'm deeply grateful for everyone's contributions so far and excited about what we'll accomplish together in this new season.
During this session, we can use our open discussion to:
After we reconnect and get settled into the new season, there are several proposals and updates I'd like to discuss. These include ideas we began exploring at the end of last season and some new thoughts that emerged during the break. I welcome your feedback on all of these items:
During our most recent two town hall meetings before the break, we agreed that starting with a simple participant agreement for Optimism Fractal makes the most sense for now. I've been thinking extensively about this over the break and have additional thoughts to share.
I'd like to review what we discussed previously, gather fresh feedback, and aim to have an agreement in place before the second or third event of the season. I encourage everyone to review the draft proposal and watch the videos from Optimism Town Hall 37 and 38 where we discussed this topic. If you have thoughts about the participant agreement, please share them in our Discord or on the Notion page linked above.
For implementation, we're still exploring the use of Hats Protocol and their agreement module, which I plan to test in the coming weeks. I've also explored options including more comprehensive legal frameworks like DUNA/UNA (unincorporated nonprofit association), which could be potential future iterations if needed.
I'd like to propose new rules for Optimism Town Hall Cagendas that include a minimum respect vote threshold to trigger meetings. This change would mean we would only hold Optimism Town Hall events when there's sufficient community interest (perhaps measured by at least 2,000 respect votes on a proposed topic in the snapshot before Monday at 17 UTC).
This approach allows us to:
If we adopt this proposal, Optimism Fractal would still continue to host Respect Games on a biweekly basis – we just might not have an Optimism Town Hall event after some Optimism Fractal events if a topic doesn't surpass the minimum threshold of respect votes.
We remain committed to providing a space for important Optimism ecosystem discussions, but this approach helps us allocate our limited resources where they'll have the most impact. This is particularly important as we prepare to reintroduce Eden Town Hall in the coming months alongside Eden Fractal Epoch 2, which will provide another venue for collaborative discussions focused on fractal governance and respect games.
In addition to these draft proposals, I have two important updates to share regarding the Optimism Town Hall voting systems:
1. Temporary removal of OP token voting: Last season, we experimented with allowing OP token holders to vote on topics to make our governance more inclusive for the broader Optimism Collective and Superchain. However, I've had to temporarily disable this feature as we don't yet have a custom voting strategy in the snapshot to prevent it from becoming plutocratic. We're actively seeking contributors to help develop this feature and plan to reintroduce it once we have the proper technical implementation.
2. Adding new ORDAO respect: I'll be updating our snapshot settings to ensure that respect earned from all seasons counts toward voting power in Optimism Town Hall. Specifically, I'll be adding Seasons 5 and 6 to join the already-included Seasons 1-4. This will be a simple backend change that won't require any action from community members.
This is an exciting time for our entire Superchain and Fractal Ecosystem. In addition to Optimism Fractal and Optimism Town Hall returning this Thursday, Eden Fractal will be coming back from its spring break on May 22nd, entering its second epoch.
Eden Fractal is approaching its three-year anniversary next month and will be deploying its software on Base, creating exciting opportunities for the entire Superchain ecosystem. Later, we plan to reintroduce Eden Town Hall, which will provide another venue for exploring fractal governance and democratic funding models. These initiatives at Eden Fractal will offer valuable experiments and innovations that will benefit the Optimism Fractal community and the wider Optimism Collective.
Through these complementary communities, we're building a comprehensive ecosystem of tools and processes that strengthen governance across the Superchain. The learnings and technologies we develop together will help shape more equitable systems throughout Web3.
We invite everyone to be part of this exciting journey as we build better governance systems and strengthen the Optimism ecosystem together. Whether you're a long-time participant or joining for the first time, your voice matters in these discussions.
As always, you can RSVP in our event calendar to receive reminders, and we encourage you to explore our previous discussions on the Eden Creators youtube channel to get a sense of the topics we cover.
Looking forward to reconnecting with everyone this Thursday as we embark on what promises to be our most impactful season yet!
