SIP-9: Devops - Next ETH2 client

Voting ended almost 5 years agoSucceeded

We currently run Prysm for all our 170 validators.

We plan to add at least 3x this number soon.

Therefore it may be prudent to try some other clients out. For the sake of diversity and decentralization.

Details on all 7 clients: https://someresat.medium.com/ethereum-and-the-seven-clients-648815c4ac71

Please also note that the EF on the launchpad page only suggests and supports 4 of these clients, namely:

  • Prysm
  • Teku
  • Lighthouse
  • Nimbus

Ref: https://launchpad.ethereum.org/en/checklist

Pros:

  • More clients = more diversity and more decentralization

Cons:

  • Adding new clients comes with a full learning curve for learning how to operate them
  • There is a higher chance of failure or issues with the other clients compared to Prysm as Prysm has consistently performed the best in tests and has the largest community
  • There is added infrastructure costs and devops overhead of running a different client on another server
