Skatehive Governance Update

Voting ended over 1 year agoSucceeded

TL;DR

Our current governance setup is incomplete and requires refinement. This proposal outlines two potential paths for evolving our DAO structure to better support Skatehive’s mission and objectives.

History and Current Challenges

When Skatehive launched, we introduced the Skatehive OG NFT as an early supporter token on Ethereum, with a minting period that lasted 333 days. A total of 53 individuals either minted or were airdropped the Skatehive OG NFT with a minting price of 0.03 ETH

List of Holders

As the minting period concluded and our relationship with Gnars DAO developed, we integrated Gnars NFTs into our governance model.

The current governance structure allocates voting power as follows:

  • 1 SKATEHIVE OG = 50 VOTES
  • 1 GNAR = 1 VOTE

Our treasury is currently spread across multiple wallets:

  • Ethereum Multisig : 535 USD
  • Base Multisig: 887 USD
  • Hot Wallet : 1445 USD

Giveth Quadratic funding round will be paid at the hot wallet: skatehive.eth

Everytime a proposal passes on snapshot, we need to manually trigger a transaction for one of those wallets which is very centralized and requires a lot of work

Identified Issues

  1. The Skatehive OG NFT was a successful experiment but its role has ended, leaving no sustainable way for it to support the treasury.
  2. Gnars NFTs do not contribute to the Skatehive treasury, as they primarily serve as vote as recognition for Gnars' support of skateboarding culture.

New Skatehive NFTs Experiment

To address those gaps, last weekend, Web-Gnar and Vlad deployed a new Skatehive NFT collection on Nouns.Build, a platform designed for launching Nounish DAOs (auction based daos). This collection is structured to generate one new Skatehive NFT daily, indefinitely. All funds generated from these NFT auctions are stored in a wallet governed by these new Skatehive NFT Holders.

With this new tooling, we have the opportunity to enhance not just the Dao revenue generation but the governance process of skatehive which put our community in front of a decision. After discussing in discord we came up with 2 possible paths forward. Keep in mind that everything is in constant evolution nothing is definitive and there is always room for improvement.

🔷 Proposed Path Forward #1: Full Nounish Governance

Tl;Dr: Just use the new dao and sunset snapshot (The simple solution)

✅ Pros:

  • Fully decentralized governance through the on-chain Governor contract.
  • Consolidates governance to one blockchain (Base).
  • Eliminates the need for manual multisig transaction approvals.

❌ Cons:

  • Limited to a “1 token = 1 vote” model.
  • Requires rebuilding the /dao page (currently mirroring Skatehive Snapshot).

✴ Implementation Plan:

  1. Airdrop new Nounish tokens to existing Skatehive OG holders. 1:1 Honor the SKTHV OG holders by airdropping them 5 New SkateHive NFTs per one OG.
    • 1 SKTHV OG = 5 nounish SkateHive NFTs
  2. Disable Snapshot as the primary governance platform.
  3. Transfer funds from the multisig to the Governor contract for on-chain management.

Financial Migration and MGMT

  1. Consolidate our ETH into one place ~$1300 (from the old Skatehive treasuries (we had two) to the new Skatehive Treasury wallet address that was created with nouns.build).
  2. Convert all our ETH stables (USDC) for HBD and put in Savings. Will still available for use in the dao but while its sitting there will be generating 15% APR that will be powered up increasing our curation power. (this part will still require trust from the hive wallet managers)

🔷 Proposed Path Forward #2: Snapshot Governance with New Token Integration

TL;DR: Use all tokens including the new one in SnapShot (The complex solution)

✅ Pros:

  • Allows for more diverse governance models (e.g., quadratic voting).
  • Reduces the risk of Sybil attacks.
  • Can maintain existing voting strategies beyond “1 token = 1 vote.”
  • Dont generate extra effort dev effort in /dao page beyond what is already necessary

❌ Cons:

  • Requires manual treasury management (e.g., moving auction funds to the multisig). Which is a pain in the ass for the maintainers and may be for the community. we would need to periodically move funds from the Buider contract to the multisig using skatehive.eth wallet admin or making proposals)
  • Not fully on-chain, requiring administrative oversight.

✴ Implementation Plan:

  1. Add the new Skatehive NFTs to Snapshot as a voting strategy.
  2. Allocate 25 votes per nounish Skatehive NFT (half the voting power of a Skatehive OG).
  3. Create and text process for funds transfering

Proposed Voting Power Strategy

  • 1 Gnar = 1 Vote
  • 1 nounish Skatehive NFT = 25 Votes
  • 1 Skatehive OG = 50 Votes

Ok, what about Hive

Although Hive is equipped for governance, integrating votes across multiple blockchains would require a more complex setup. For now, simpler systems like Snapshot and Nounish governance should be prioritized to streamline adoption.

VOTING OPTIONS :

  • OPTION 1: Full Nounish Decentralized Dao

  • OPTION 2: Keep SnapShot Governance and transfer funds periodically
