Context
Citrea is a Bitcoin Layer 2 zk-rollup designed to add programmable execution and smart contracts to the Bitcoin ecosystem. Bitcoin serves as the settlement layer and external verification anchor through BitVM-based proof validation.
Key Features
- zk-rollup batches and state commitments are periodically posted to Bitcoin, providing external verifiability and minimizing trust assumptions.
- EVM-compatible execution environment and support for Solidity smart contracts.
- Full support for standard Ethereum tooling, wallets, and DeFi applications.
- Native BTC bridging for programmable BTC use on L2.
Citrea is developed by Chainway Labs, led by CEO Orkun Kılıç.
The Citrea testnet launched in 2024. The mainnet launch is expected in the near term.
Proposal
Enable BTC bridging functionality for Citrea using Symbiosis smart contracts. The integration includes the following steps:
- Deploy and configure Symbiosis bridging contracts on Citrea to support BTC wrapping and unwrapping (BTC ↔ syBTC).
- Activating the Symbiosis Relayers Network to work with the new blockchain.
- Extend Symbiosis protocol functionality to support BTC.Bitcoin ↔ syBTC.Citrea bridging and later BTC.Bitcoin ↔ Any.Citrea swaps.
Key Points
- Introducing support for the Bitcoin L2 chain will empower users to interact with assets on the Bitcoin blockchain more securely and conveniently.
- The upcoming mainnet launch is expected to drive interest, attract users, and generate transaction flow.
- Citrea EVM compatibility enables straightforward integration into the Symbiosis protocol, providing immediate access to bridging functionality and expanding user options.
