Print Editions is a new permutation that will produce limited runs of artist-authorized physical prints of select pieces in the Hashes DAO art collection.
The first drop, to be subsidized by this proposal, features Schematic and Mehretu by Nick Kuder and Blossoming Cadaver by Botto.
Schematic was acquired by the Hashes DAO in November 2021 from the Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated series alongside works from Andy Warhol, Kaws, Banksy, and Marina Abramovich. Botto is a pioneering decentralized AI artist governed by its community. Blossoming Cadaver is the third piece from Botto’s genesis period.
What’s going on here?
Print Editions has two primary objectives.
First, it is a marketing tool to raise awareness about the Hashes DAO and activate members of the community. With several promising generative art drops on the horizon, physical prints are a cost effective way to earn the attention of collectors with respectable NFT collections but empty walls at home. It is also a nice way to reward hash holders with something tangible.
Second, limited runs of artist-authorized physical prints of select pieces in the Hashes DAO art collection has the potential to generate meaningful revenue for the DAO treasury and reinforce demand for DAO hashes.
Even after covering the cost of 65 prints, the DAO breaks even on this Permutation if the supply cap is reached for all three prints in this release assuming we markup prints by $100 each and the DAO captures a 50% profit share. Once we validate the concept and better understand the demand for artist-authorized physical prints of grails in the Hashes DAO collection, we can offer print runs without subsidy that could generate meaningful revenue for the DAO treasury — or continue to subsidize prints as part of our community rewards program.
To the extent demand exceeds supply for particular print editions, DAO hashes could be the difference between landing a grail or missing out.
Who’s Involved?
Hash Hodler and Quimp are familiar names in the Hashes DAO community. Hash Hodler produced the first generative art drop on Hashes infrastructure (Permutation 2) featuring a unique collaboration between Joshua Davis and Jana Styblova. Quimp is a contributor to both Hashes and Botto DAOs and was recently approved to lead Permutation 6, a generative photography project with Carlo van de Rorer. Plus both Hash Hodler and Quimp are signers on the Perm 1 and Perm 5 multisig wallets.
Nick Kuder and core contributors from Botto DAO have agreed to be launch partners and pilot this program with us. Quimp has already circulated and has support for a version of this proposal from the core team at Botto DAO.
Level Frames is our fulfillment partner and will support printing, framing, and international shipping. Level has a strong track record having worked with other well known NFT artists such as Reuben Wu and Dmitri Cherniak.
The Ask
While this Permutation has the potential to pay for itself and generate meaningful revenue for the DAO treasury, it requires a 15 ETH budget to get started which covers the cost of the operating budget, 65 prints, and 25 frames. Nick Kuder has also offered to sign his prints, so the budget includes a line item to pay his expenses for a signing session at the Level office in Brooklyn.
DAO Funded Print Allocation
The basic intent is to reward key stakeholders in the Hashes community with privileged access (via raffle) to DAO funded prints. In the tentative allocation below, DAO hash holders are the primary beneficiary followed by standard hash holders, Europa collectors, and DAO affiliates such as Botto DAO and Nick Kuder collectors.
