Background
During yesterday's DAO Call, we decided to eliminate another friction to our governance process by removing the temp check via this very Snapshot platform.
There are several reasons for this proposal:
- Snapshot was used initially for temp checks because we used to be on ETH Mainnet, which meant voting onchain was expensive. Yet we moved last year to Base, and voting costs are microcent amounts.
- Voter participation has further declined, and it seems to us that voters are split partially between Snapshot and Tally voting, which, of course, is besides the point.
New Governance Process
The new governance process would adjust, therefore, to:
- Open a forum thread in the Unlock Protocol Discord Server, ideally, use the provided template (that we used here on Snapshot; will be available via the documentation)
- If there is no significant backlash, move the proposal to our Tally onchain voting platform to receive a final vote by the community. Suppose your proposal requires a payment that is meant to be provided retroactively. In that case, it can't be added in this first proposal but requires a second one after the suggested services or products have been provided.
Risks vs. Benefits
Our current assumption is that DAO Members are often overwhelmed by having to keep track of too many things. This step will minimize the things they need to keep track of. At the same time, it eliminates double chances on voting, meaning there is only ONE vote now; if you miss out, you miss out. We will do our best to keep members alert via the weekly DAO Call and newsletter, so the benefits of this outweigh the risks.
Connected Tasks
By making a fundamental adjustment to our governance process, we need to assure the following:
- General awareness through the newsletter and our social media
- Updating our official governance documentation and Charmverse instructions
