His powers grow as he continues his Vyper training. Having exhausted the knowledge held by the Vyper Tribe, he begins traveling across the Proto-Chains in search for more ancient codecubes that contain the Vyper code he needs to attain mastery.
In an old desert ruin, he eventually stumbles upon a codecube containing a blueprint for an "EVM".
The blueprint is complex. There is no single way to "decode" it - it appears open to interpretation. Vitalik is presented with a choice, and each one imposes a flaw:
The EVM design cannot sustain a stable balance of de/centralization.
Chainspace is fated to ebb and flow from one to the other, leading to drastic transitions in control and power.
The EVM design can only function for a limited number of blocks. When that blocklimit is breached, the EVM will cease to function.
What exists beyond that point is unknown.
Unless a revised design can be discovered and developed, Chainspace will eventually be severed in two: the historical period in which the EVM functioned and maintained order, and the post-EVM era of chaos, disorder and collapse.
The 0x00 watches silently in anticipation..
The EVM design cannot support an efficient gas model. Each new transaction linearly increases the gas cost for the next transaction.
At some point, the gas costs to create new transactions will be so great that the entire system permanently freezes.
The end is in sight. The gas costs rise with each block mined and each transaction processed.
Without a new gas-efficient transaction system, the Ethereum chain will one day exhaust its power supplies and the chain itself will freeze over. Static, and lifeless.
