002 - CONFLICT / The EVM's Fatal Flaw

Voting ended over 4 years agoSucceeded

Vitalik is the Vyper-God

Transformed by his chance encounter with an Ancient Memwraith, Vitalik has become the Vyper-God. The embodiment of the sacred language that can alter the fabric of Chainspace.

His powers grow as he continues his Vyper training. Having exhausted the knowledge held by the Vyper Tribe, he begins traveling across the Proto-Chains in search for more ancient codecubes that contain the Vyper code he needs to attain mastery.

In an old desert ruin, he eventually stumbles upon a codecube containing a blueprint for an "EVM".

The blueprint is complex. There is no single way to "decode" it - it appears open to interpretation. Vitalik is presented with a choice, and each one imposes a flaw:

Option 1

Destabilization of De/Centralization

The EVM design cannot sustain a stable balance of de/centralization.

Chainspace is fated to ebb and flow from one to the other, leading to drastic transitions in control and power.

Outcome: The Twin Talismans

  1. The Twin Talismans of Decentralization & Centralization appear (Ancient Artifacts).
  2. Chainspace can swing rapidly between centralization and decentralization, with the locations, powers, artifacts and characters bonded to the Talismans shifting between being over or underpowered.
  3. Unlocks the future "Restore the Balance" questline.

Option 2

The Blocklimit Barrier

The EVM design can only function for a limited number of blocks. When that blocklimit is breached, the EVM will cease to function.

What exists beyond that point is unknown.

Outcome: Countdown to Breakdown

Unless a revised design can be discovered and developed, Chainspace will eventually be severed in two: the historical period in which the EVM functioned and maintained order, and the post-EVM era of chaos, disorder and collapse.

The 0x00 watches silently in anticipation..

  1. Portal to the Shadowchain emerges at the Blocklimit Barrier point
  2. Unlocks the future "Showdown with Shadowchain" questline

Option 3

Gas Giant

The EVM design cannot support an efficient gas model. Each new transaction linearly increases the gas cost for the next transaction.

At some point, the gas costs to create new transactions will be so great that the entire system permanently freezes.

Outcome: Deep Freeze

The end is in sight. The gas costs rise with each block mined and each transaction processed.

Without a new gas-efficient transaction system, the Ethereum chain will one day exhaust its power supplies and the chain itself will freeze over. Static, and lifeless.

  1. Increase in Degenerator raids on gas production & refinery facilities
  2. Risk of gas wars increases over time
  3. 50% chance of unlocking the quest: "The Blockworm Backlash"
  4. Unlocks the future "Seeking Godblood" questline.
