Ratifying our new Code of Conduct

This is a proposal to ratify the new Water & Music Code of Conduct, reflecting a set of guidelines that govern interactions within the community and laying out formal processes for adjudicating any issues that may arise around W&M member conduct.

The motivation behind this proposal comes from the strong growth in community membership over the past year, as well as the transition of Water & Music into a community-governed DAO. While we hope that conduct-related issues are few and far between, we also recognize that with the increase in scale of both membership in W&M and activities being undertaken by the DAO, there will likely be times where issues of conduct arise.

We formally introduced a draft of this new Code of Conduct to the W&M community on November 10, 2022, and gave members roughly one week (up until November 15, 2022) to issue feedback and suggest any changes in content or language.

The Culture Committee and Core Team then reviewed and either accepted or rejected suggestions and comments in line with the higher-level intention of the document. In this case there were no substantive comments submitted by the community, and so there is no changelog of document edits provided.

This new Code of Conduct represents a proactive approach to governing member conduct by clearly laying out rules and expectations around community member behavior, both within the Water & Music Discord server and in other Water & Music-affiliated places. By providing clarity in what is expected of our members and incorporating these guidelines into our community onboarding materials and process, we hope to safeguard Water & Music’s unique culture and identity, and minimize the likelihood that issues around conduct will arise in the first place.

We recognize that there will be times when issues do arise and need to be considered and adjudicated. This new Code of Conduct is meant to provide clarity on the formal processes that will be undertaken should issues around conduct arise. It includes examples of behaviors that are encouraged and discouraged by the Code of Conduct, as well as behaviors that can trigger a review, and enforcement guidelines that follow. It was also designed to protect the rights of individuals who might wish to report an issue around conduct, including provisions for protecting the confidentiality and anonymity of those reporting incidents.
